Xavi joins the Centurion

Last Friday, Xavi Hernandez i Creus joined the illustrious class as he made is 100th appearance for his national team. Andoni Zubizarreta, Raul Gonzalez and Iker Casillas are the only three to have achieve this feat in La Furia Roja before him.

The diminutive midfield playmaker has been a regular face in the Spanish national team set up since he made his debut in November 2000. Prior to his senior cap, the pass master captained the Spanish u-20 side to World Cup glory in Nigeria in 1999, he was also a member of the silver medal Spanish team at 2000 Olympics Male football event.

Xavi has not missed a single tournament since his debut and was named the official best player in Euro 2008 as Spain won their first major trophy in 44 years. The Spanish playmaker played a key role in Spain’s World Cup success. He finished with an 89 percent pass completion rate. His total of 669 passes attempted was 104 more than the next player to him Germany’s Bastian Schweinsteiger at the World Cup.

A delighted Xavi revealed to AS “I still have many more games“.  He said, “I’m very proud of reaching the 100 mark but I think I have many more left.” His national team captain Iker Casillas said “Xavi is an extraordinary footballer and an exceptional man off the pitch. He is also a great captain of Barcelona

Xavi is already 31 but his intricate passing game is based less on physical prowess and more on his technical ability. I would not be surprise if he were to go on and be part of the Spain squad hoping to retain their trophy at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Congratulations to Raul Gonzalez’s heir as the greatest Spanish outfield player.  Congratulations Xavi!

To think he played in Nigeria 99 with Aghahowa and ikedia, who are no where to be found now

    • Loooool. It’s a shame but we can console ourselves with the fact that Yobo played in that tournament and he’s presently the captain of the Super Eagles. Iker Casillas of Real Madrid and Dani Aranzubia of Deportivo La Coruna were Xavi’s team mates then and they are still playing at the highest level. Age grade tournaments were created to nurture stars of the feature. Remember Seydou Keita of Mali? Xavi’s present team mate in FC Barcelona….he was the MVP of the tournament.

  2. congrats to xavi..he proved his worth..
