Odemwingie: Is he the “signing of the season”?

Signing of the season?

For Lokomotiv Moscow fans, Peter Osaze Odemwingie moving from the Lokomotiv stadium to The Hawthorns was good riddance to bad rubbish. The Russian club’s fans celebrated the sale of Odemwingie through the use of racist banners which included the image of a banana and read “Thanks West Brom”.

Osaze had earlier disappointed many of his fans when he left Lille OSC of France for Russia. The brilliant forward who  is notable to many for his technique and pace was expected to move to a bigger league preferably the English Premier League. The 29 years old delayed the move for a further three years until he signed last summer for the West Midlands club on the eve of the 2010/11 season.

He wasted no time to make his mark in as he scored the solitary goal on his debut for West Brom in the season opener against Sunderland. He has led the attack line for The Baggies this season. His brilliant display coupled with goal in West Brom’s 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates last september and other impressive display was recognized as he won the Barclays Player of Month award in September 2010.

Osaze who set himself a personal target of 15 leagues goals is almost certain to meet his target as he has scored 14 times in the EPL this season. He has surpassed Robert Earnshaw 12 Premier league goal tally for the club in a single season in the Premier League. He also became the first player in West Brom’s Premier League history to score in four consecutive games when he scored against Aston Villa last weekend.

Besides his goals, his ability to hold up play, draw players to himself, his work rate and ability to bring other players into play has endeared him to the West Brom faithfuls. He also supports his team when they need to defend

West Bromwich Albion gamble on the Lokomotiv Moscow reject has paid off with his impressive performances during the course of this season and transfer rumors suggest that bigger clubs in the EPL and the Serie A are already courting the Nigerian international.

I am of the opinion that Osaze Odemwingie whose services was acquired for £1 million pounds is the signing of the season in the England even though I have to acknowledge the remarkable performance of Manchester United Mexican striker Javier Hernandez (Chicharito) who has done exceptionally well too.

Please have your say……..

  1. I totally agree with you on this. Hernandez might be a huge contender but placing both players contributions side by side, I’ll go with Osaze.

Well judging by their performance this season I’ll go with Hernandez, but Osaze is still a better anyday…

Yeah..he has to be the signing of the season for me.for a club to sign a player that scores 14 goals in his first season, at a paltry one million pounds, difficult league and at an age of 29.not to mention the poorer service he has from midfield compared manU.To cap it all, most of his goals were from individual brilliance compared to chicha.so its osaze for me( without bias)

In my opinion Osaze is definitely the signing of the season considering the club he plays for and his performance do far, Chicarito and Vandervert are good contenders too, but Osaze is the man

He is a player with a lot of commitment; but it is a little late for a big move: 29 years….. Given the price, the workrate and the goals he has provided;;; Undoubtably signing of the season

I will have to go with Hernandez. This is a player that wasn’t even a starter at the beginning of the season. He has so much so helped MANU, that they could have been out of the contest for the Premier League title. On the other hand, Osaze has to be reckoned with, b’cos Westbrom could have been fighting relegation if not for his goals, that has helped them.

He has been the best buy no doubt, in westbrom he has performed exceptionally well, I bliv he will do better if he was in a bigger team,I still belive we will see more of him.

for you to be able to play in a club like west brom and still make your mark you are definitely something special. I totally agree with you. He has also shown he is a real professional by the way he plays for the team and has been able to keep the media silent and on his side. I hope we see more performances from him for his country too.

I have to disagree with this. Chicharito for me was the signing of the season. His First Season in Europe. The Pressure for playing for a Bigger club plus the fact that he benched the ( even before the season was far from over )…the league’s highest goal scorer. Osaze only starred in the EPL. Lil Pea blossomed in both the EPL and UCL ( plus he scored in his debut…community sheild against chelsea )
